Soul Bay meets Collected Works downtown!

Soul Bay Press are thrilled to be able to launch their latest two publications in Melbourne’s very own poetry sanctuary, Collected Works, on Wednesday 28th November 2018. From sometime after closing until sometime after reading at 1/37 Swanston St, Melbourne VIC 3000. Full details to follow!

Soul Bay Press was founded in 2007, a fiercely independent book publishers based somewhere between Eastbourne & London (UK) and Sydney (Aus). SBP have published a range of works including: Howard Cunnell, Guy Debord, Matthew Loukes, Harry Crosby & Samantha Herron. The latest two works are ‘Sunflower Eclipse over Troia Nova’ by Andrew Franks and ‘Angel Frankenstein’ by George Mouratidis.

George Mouratidis was born in Athens, Greece, and grew up in the working-class migrant enclave of Thomastown in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

He has taught cultural studies at RMIT University and American literature at The University of Melbourne, where he co-founded the Living Poetry Sessions with writer-poet Lucy Van, and is currently completing his PhD on the politics and poetics of the Beat Generation titled Becoming Beat. Mouratidis was a contributing editor of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road: The Original Scroll (Penguin, 2007). His work appears in local and international publications including 13 (Soul Bay, 2013), Unusual Work, Southerly and Antipodes, among others.

He is the translator of Noted Transparencies (Owl Press, 2016), a poetry collection by the Greek-language poet Nikos Nomikos, and is currently working on Nomikos’ latest collection, The Course of the Deep Well-Spring. Mouratidis lives and works in Melbourne. Angel Frankenstein (Soul Bay, 2018) is his first poetry collection.

Andrew Franks was born in Eastbourne, Sussex in the early sixties, a skimming stone’s throw away from Soul Bay.

He has worked in local government, theatre, as an English language teacher, a cycle courier in London, a musician and for magazine and newspaper companies around the world. He currently lives on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where he owned & managed Manly’s seminal bookshop ‘Desire Books’.  He performs his poetry on a regular basis in Sydney & London. In addition, he hosts a weekly radio show ‘London Calling’ on Sydney’s 2RRR and plays guitar in two bands ‘The fReds’ & ‘The Butterfly House’.

His first collection ‘Scratched in the stars, sprawled on the sand’ (Soul Bay, 2009), has had to be reprinted four times. His second collection ‘The last of the great British traitors’ (Soul Bay, 2011) was in part inspired by his father’s autobiography (discovered posthumously). Franks also contributed ‘Engels’ Ashes’ to a short story compilation ‘Thirteen’ (Soul Bay, 2013). His third collection of poetry ‘Sunflower Eclipse over Troia Nova’ (Soul Bay, 2018) is to be published in November 2018.
